Our Elaborate Plans
Stephen Loughman’s new exhibition Our Elaborate Plans utilizes imagery from commercial films as source material. Loughman reformats and recontextualizes these images by slowing them down during the painting process, giving them new meanings.
Although most of the scenes used last barely a second and may appear banal, when isolated, this banality becomes uncanny. They reflect the unease within contemporary culture, prompting us to pause and look deeper into what these images reveal about us and the culture we exist in. The images predominantly come from dystopian/horror films, but also from mainstream cinema. All titles are derived from the respective film’s scripts.
